Portrait challenge

Portrait

Recognise historical figures from their portraits. Start with the image alone, or add extra information when you want a little help.

Look closely at the portrait Guess the historical person Reveal clues only when you need them

How the clues work

Start with the face, then reveal only what you need

Portrait is intentionally simple at the start of each round: the image is the clue. If recognition is not enough, you can reveal additional information step by step instead of immediately giving away the answer.

Life years

Reveal the person's birth and death years to place the portrait in the right historical period.

Occupation

Reveal what the person is known for, such as physicist, writer, ruler or American president.

Places

Reveal the birth and death locations when geography is the clue that helps connect the face to a name.

What it trains

Visual historical recognition

Historical figures are often remembered through a small number of familiar portraits or photographs. This mode turns those images into active recall: instead of seeing a caption immediately, you first decide what you recognise.

The optional clue system also makes the same collection useful at different knowledge levels. You can keep the game portrait-only or gradually add context when you want a more guided challenge.
